The election of the pope, also known as the papal conclave, is the process by which a new pope is chosen to lead the Roman Catholic Church. When the position of the pope becomes vacant, usually due to the death or resignation of the current pope, the College of Cardinals gathers in the Vatican City to elect a new pontiff. The conclave is a highly secretive and ceremonial process, with strict rules and protocols that must be followed. The cardinals are sequestered in the Sistine Chapel, where they cast their votes in a series of ballots until one candidate receives a two-thirds majority. Once a candidate has been elected, he is asked if he accepts the position and what name he wishes to be known by as pope. The newly elected pope then appears on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica to greet the faithful and impart his first blessing as the leader of the Catholic Church. The election of the pope is considered one of the most important and sacred duties of the College of Cardinals, as the pope is believed to be the successor of St. Peter and the spiritual leader of the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics.

Pope Benedict XVI, born Joseph Ratzinger, shocked the world in 2013 when he announced his decision to abdicate the papacy due to his declining health and advancing age. This made him the first pope to resign in almost 600 years. His resignation took effect on February 28, 2013, and he was succeeded by Pope Francis.
